NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – An off-duty NYPD officer lost his life in a crash on the FDR Drive Saturday morning, police said.

The crash around 2:30 a.m. also critically injured two passengers in the vehicle, one of whom is believe to be a firefighter, according to CBS2.

The 25-year-old, off-duty officer was driving a black Lexus near 23rd Street when he lost control of the vehicle and hit a center median and a steel pedestrian footbridge.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Footage from the scene shows the heavily damaged black sedan surrounded by dozens of FDNY firefighters.

A man and a woman, also 25 years old, were rushed to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition. The man had been ejected from the vehicle, while the woman was found inside with a leg injury.

They were upgraded to serious but stable condition Saturday.

The officer who was killed has not been identified by police.

The crash shut down the FDR for hours. Police are investigating the cause.
