GLEN HEAD, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A workplace dispute turned deadly in Glen Head Saturday morning, according to police.

An employee fatally shot a coworker during an altercation at an area gas station, Nassau police confirmed.

"They just didn't like each other,” said Commanding Officer Stephen Fitzpatrick.

Nassau County Police Lieutenant Richard Lebrun said the incident happened at 11:20 a.m. at the Citgo service station at D and R Automotive.

Lawrence Grammer, 71, has gotten into an argument with coworker Bashir Ward, 35, when he pulled out a gun and fatally shot Ward, police said.

Fitzpatrick explained there had also been another physical confrontation on Friday between the two. It appears as if the argument continued into Saturday morning.

Grammer was arrested shortly after the shooting and Ward was pronounced dead at the scene.

Grammer had been convicted of rape 18 years ago and could not legally own a gun. He is charged with murder and criminal use of a firearm. An arraignment was scheduled for Sunday morning.

“I’d like to stress to the community that this is not a random act,” Lebrun said of the crime, adding, “The neighborhood is deemed safe.”
