NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The "Fearless Girl" statue is being moved next to the New York Stock Exchange in the heart of the Financial District and away from Wall Street's "Charging Bull."

The current location in a narrow median on Broadway often gets overrun with tourists who also sometimes stand in the street and the city sought a more pedestrian-friendly location for the statue.

Mayor Bill de Blasio says this new spot will alleviate safety issues.

“We are proud to be home to the Fearless Girl. She is a powerful symbol of the need for change at the highest levels of corporate America—and she will become a durable part of our city’s civic life,” said de Blasio. “This move to a new location will improve access for visitors and ensure that her message and impact continues to be heard.”

The bronze sculpture of the ponytailed girl in a windblown dress became an instant hit with tourists when it popped up on the eve of International Women’s Day in March 2017, standing defiantly across from the bull.

State Street Global Advisors, which commissioned the artwork, said it will be moved by the end of the year.

The statue has become a symbol for "increasing the representation of women at senior levels of management."
