First Human Case Of West Nile Virus Reported In Manhattan

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The New York City Health Department says the first human case of West Nile virus has arrived in New York City for the 2018 season.

They say the patient is a Manhattan resident who is over the age of 50. It was confirm that the patient was hospitalized earlier this month and suffered from an inflammation of brain tissue.

The patient has since been discharged but health officials say this is the earliest confirmed case of West Nile since New York City started keeping track in 1999.

Typically, the virus will begin to appear in the city between late July and October.
