NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A former dean at Columbia University has died, a month after he was hit by a car while walking home from campus.

Peter Awn, 75, was the dean of Columbia’s School of General Studies from 1997 to 2017.

Awn was hit on January 25 by a Toyota Highlander at West 116th Street and Claremont Avenue, say police.

He succumbed to his head injury on Sunday at Columbia University Medical Center, where he was being treated.

Columbia’s president, Lee Bollinger, said Awn was “one of the essential leaders of Columbia University’s modern era.”

Awn was a former Jesuit priest and a scholar of Islamic religion.

The driver who hit Awn stayed at the scene, and has not been charged.
