Four Cases Of Polio-Like Illness Under Investigation In New York

October 21, 2018 - 12:41 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Four cases of a mysterious illness have been diagnosed in New York State, resulting in paralysis similar to the symptoms of polio.

State officials could not reveal the details regarding the whereabouts in New York, ages, gender or any other identifying details about the cases.

Doctors are warning parents though to stay on high alert for any signs of numbness or fatigue in kids, especially when they may already be exhibiting symptoms of the common cold.

The four cases have not been linked to the dozens of confirmed reports of Acute Flaccid Myelitis.

The state reported forty confirmed cases last week. The illness causes children to lose feeling in their arms or legs and may also affect muscles used to breathe in rare instances.

The CDC has announced it is looking at 127 paralysis cases in 22 different states.

Health officials are recommending that people wash hands often and keep them away from their eyes, nose and mouth.
