July 22, 2018 - 11:20 am

UNION CITY, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- Funeral service for the five children who died in last week’s five-alarm fire in Union City will be held this week.

Leber Funeral Home announced service for the children – Jason Gonzalez, 2; Shamira Lopez, 4; Mayli Wood, 5; Christian Josue Mendez, 7; and Jose Felipe Tejada, 13 – would take place at St. Anthony of Padua Church on Tuesday and Wednesday.

All of the children were siblings, expect for Wood who was a cousin and lived in a third-floor apartment with the other children.

Officials say the fatal fire began on the first floor of the three-story multi-family home on July 13. The blaze was first reported at around 9 a.m. and reached five alarms before firefighters were able to quell the flames at around 11:30 a.m.

Gonzalez and Wood were pronounced dead at the scene while the other children were taken to hospitals in the surrounding area for treatment. All succumbed to their injuries just days later.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but a July 17 report revealed the building’s owner was hit with 11 fire code violations, including failing to maintain fire alarms and smoke detectors.

Visitations will be held at the church from noon Tuesday until 9 a.m. Wednesday. A funeral mass will be said at the church following visitation.
