Fur Ban Opponents Rally Against City Council Bill

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) Fur fans and fur shop owners took to the steps of City Hall to rally against a proposed City Council bill that would ban the sale of fur in the city.

The bill is set to have a hearing Wednesday afternoon.

Protesters wore furs and t-shirts saying “No fur ban. Police our streets not our closets.”

Steve Cowit, a successful furrier, said, “I work with my brother Larry. We’re third generation furriers. We own Madison Avenue furs. Once again, our business has been around for over 80 years. This ban is almost criminal. We’re talking about job losses, tax revenue losses, empty store fronts."

He added, what about, “freedom of choice. You don't want to wear fur, fine. You don't want to eat meat, you don't want to wear leather, fine. But, if I do, stay out of my closet."

Samantha Ortiz, president of Reich Furs on W. 30th Street said, “I’m devastated right now. You know that our business has been around over 50 years and I’m standing hear fighting for it right now on behalf of my entire family. This business has supported us for four generations and the fact that I have to stand here and fight for my job and for my company and our employees and the right to do what we love is sickening to me.”
