Gov. Phil Murphy Says New Jersey Will Legalize Marijuana Soon

July 08, 2018 - 4:25 pm

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey did not legalize recreational cannabis as part of its recent $37.4 billion budget.

But Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy and top lawmakers say it's coming, and soon.

Murphy says he didn't include anticipated revenue from legalized marijuana because the legislation is not yet ready, but he said he thinks it will be on his desk “sooner than later.”

Senate President Steve Sweeney says he and the Assembly will take the issue up this summer. Both chambers are controlled by Democrats.

Nine states and the District of Columbia have legalized recreational marijuana.

Legalization advocates say they're trying to overcome decades of stigma. Opponents say the delay is a sign that the effort could stall out.
