After 4 Years At West Point, This Grad Learned It's All About The People

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A West Nyack man graduating from West Point on Saturday is looking beyond the mission when he thinks about his four years at the U.S. Military Academy.

For John Kelly, a West Point education is about more than military tactics and weaponry.

"The most important lesson I learned here was to invest in your relationships with people," said Kelly.

Kelly said with all of his opportunities and experiences at the academy, he's been most impressed by the people.

"Just by seeing the caliber of friends that I've made, the caliber of the instructors and the mentors here that are teaching us," Kelly said.

The cadet is relieved to be graduating. For the Clarkstown South grad, this is all about leadership.

"Being able to make constructive, effective decisions and having a positive influence on not just an organization, but also individuals' lives was something that was very appealing to me.  Something I thought I would be good at and something that I really wanted to get better at," Kelly said.

Kelly majored in civil engineering and will be joining an engineering unit at Fort Stewart in Georgia.

"We will be supporting an armor brigade with engineering assets," Kelly said. "What that involves is a lot of breaching, creating, clearing obstacles."
