GREENWICH, Conn. (WCBS 880) — A great white shark was tracked in the Long Island Sound off the coast of Connecticut Monday.

According to the tracking group OCEARCH, the shark, named Cabot, sent a ping off the coast of Greenwich at around 11 a.m.

The group said it was the first time it had tracked a white shark in the area.

“I heard sending a ping from the Long Island Sound had never been done before by a white naturally I had to visit and send one off,” read a post on Cabot’s own Twitter.

According to Cabot’s Twitter page, the 9-foot-8, 553-pound shark was tagged by OCEARCH in Nova Scotia.

Fans can track his movements on OCEARCH’s website.

Unfortunately for WCBS 880’s Wayne Cabot, the great white shark was actually named after the explorer John Cabot.
