Health Officials Warn Newark Airport Travelers Possibly Exposed To Measles

March 15, 2018 - 8:06 am

NEW JERSEY (WCBS 880) -- The New Jersey Department of Health has issued a public health alert after a young child with measles traveled through Newark Liberty International Airport on Monday.

The youngster from Brussels arrived in Terminal B before departing on a flight to Memphis from Terminal C, meaning travelers could have been exposed in either terminal.

"Measles is spread through airborne transmission so it's very easily transmissible," said New Jersey State Epidemiologist Christina Tan. "You don't necessarily have to be face to face with that individual because the measles virus can easily spread through air when someone coughs or sneezes."

Health officials are warning travelers who were at the airport between 12:45 p.m. and 9 p.m. that they may have been exposed.

Symptoms could develop as late as April 2.

Measles symptoms include rash, high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. It can cause serious complications including pneumonia and swelling of the brain.
