House Transportation Committee Chair Says Gateway Tunnel Project Will Get Funding

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The chairman of a House transportation committee announced Thursday that the Gateway Tunnel Project will get the funding it needs.

“If we do a bill, Gateway will be funded,” said Oregon Democrat Peter DeFazio after touring the 109-year-old rail tunnel.

He and members of the House committee toured the rail tunnels on Thursday and agreed that funding for the project was sorely needed.

DeFazio, who heads the transportation committee, said the project to build a new rail tunnel under the Hudson will be included in the $2 trillion infrastructure deal agreed to by top Democratic leaders and President Donald Trump.

He notes he can guarantee the money will be sent to the project when he creates the proposed legislation.

Though, beyond a funding commitment, an environmental impact study causes further issues.

“It was supposed to be done early last year and we have been demanding answers on why it's not done yet,” New Jersey Democrat Tom Malinowski said.

He said overall, the project says has “been outrageously delayed.”

Chairman DeFazio says his committee can deem the study done, which would give the Gateway Tunnel Project the green light it needs.
