Hundreds Of Needy New Yorkers Receive Coats For Christmas

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — More than a hundred people in need were able to pick up a new coat this Christmas thanks to the generosity of others.

New York Cares volunteers were able to distribute warm coats to nearly 300 homeless men and women on Christmas Day, as part of the 30th annual New York Cares Coat Drive.

As WCBS 880’s Peter Haskell reported, the line was a full block long. But these coats were a “lavish” gift for those who desperately needed them.

“I don't want to, so called, 'look homeless,' you know what I mean? I'm going to also look presentable,” said Alexander Smalls, who chose a classic barn coat at the drive.

Gary Bagley, executive director of New York Cares, said the organization has an “ambitious” goal for the year.

He told WCBS 880 he wants the group “to deliver 130,000 coats to New Yorkers who need them.”

On Christmas Day, Bagley said they were only halfway to their goal and still need donations.
