NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Patience and Fortitude, the iconic marble lions outside the entrance to the New York Public Library, are getting a makeover.

Library officials said Monday that workers will begin grooming the two lions next month.

Cracks and chips in the statues will also be repaired, as they are every 10 years when maintenance is needed because of wear and tear caused by winter weather and traffic exhaust.

The project is expected to cost $250,000 and will last nine weeks.

A corporate grant from the New York Life Foundation, along with hundreds of private donations, will fund the perseveration.

Patient and Fortitude will be covered by plywood enclosures while the work is done.

The lions were installed outside the 42nd Street library in 1911.
