Ideas For Memorial Day Fun With Your Furry Friend

The unofficial start of summer begins this Memorial Day weekend and several special events will be held in New York City. However, with loud noises and huge crowds of people, most of the city's biggest events - like Fleet Week NYC and Brooklyn’s Memorial Day Parade - aren’t necessarily pet-friendly. Fortunately, dog owners will have plenty of fun things to do in and around the city. Here are just a few ideas for Memorial Day fun with your furry friend.

Dog Grooming
Everyone deserves a bit of pampering and family pets are no exception. Reservations may be scarce over the holiday weekend, but New York City has hundreds of dog groomers. Top suggestions include Barke Shoppe, D Pet Hotels Chelsea, The Seaport Paw, The Pawlour and Unleashed Spa, among many others. If all else fails, dog owners can still pamper their pets simply by shampooing and grooming right at home.

Go To The Park
With estimates of dogs populations ranging from a half million or more, it’s pretty clear that New York City is among the most dog-friendly cities in America. One of the city’s biggest dog-friendly events will be held in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park when FIDO hosts its annual Pupnic on Friday, May 25. In addition to New York’s Central Park, other excellent spots to consider visiting over the weekend are Carl Schurz Park, Hillside Park, Inwood Hill Park Trail, Rockaway Freeway Dog Park and Sirius Dog Run in Battery Park.

Have Lunch
Since New York has more than 500 pet-friendly restaurants, doing lunch with the dog might be an especially fun thing to do over Memorial Day weekend. Among the many great spots for dog owners and their furry friends are Barking Dog Restaurant, Boat Basin Cafe, Cornelia Street Café and the Shake Shack in Madison Square Park.

Head To The Beach
It’s no secret that many, if not most dogs love playing in the water. Nevertheless, NYC beaches are mostly closed to dogs over the summer, although Prospect Park’s Dog Beach is a very popular spot despite its limited off-leash hours. Additional locations for dog owners and their pups lie outside of the city, at places like Larchmont Dog Beach near New Rochelle and on Long Island, with great spots like Gardiner County Park in Bay Shore and Amagansett and the Main Beach in East Hampton. Additionally, New Jersey’s  8th Avenue Dog Beach in Asbury Park, Longport Beach and Wildwood Dog Beach are among the best dog beaches in the country.

Take A Road Trip
Heading out on a road trip might just be the best idea for dog owners over Memorial Day weekend. Suggested pet-friendly hotels that may still have available lodging include Hither House in Montauk, Century House in Latham and Mill House Inn in East Hampton. If traveling outside of the city isn’t practical, there are more than 500 pet-friendly hotels in New York, such as 50 Bowery, Dream Midtown and Lombardy, with last minute rates available through sites like Expedia and Kayak, or reliable last minute booking apps like HotelTonight.
