IKEA Is Opening A Store In The Heart Of Manhattan

December 03, 2018 - 11:31 am

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – IKEA is continuing its push into the heart of urban areas by opening a store in Midtown next year, the company announced Monday.

IKEA said the “Ikea Planning Studio” – a slimmed down version of its big-box stores – will open at 999 Third Ave., at East 59th Street, in the spring of 2019.

“IKEA is transforming in a way that lets us meet our customers where they are,” IKEA’s country manager, Lars Petersson, said in a statement.

The store will focus on the type of small living spaces one might expect to find in New York, and it will give customers the opportunity to browse IKEA products that they can then have delivered to their homes.

IKEA recently announced it will be developing similar stores in city centers over the next three years, but New York will be the first to get the “Planning Studio concept,” the company said.

In Monday's statement, IKEA also said it's remodeling its Red Hook location and that it recently opened a new customer fulfillment center on Staten Island, which will deliver products to customers in New York.
