NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Forty-one years after starring in the award-winning film “Saturday Night Fever,” John Travolta is returning to Brooklyn on Tuesday for a ceremony honoring him at the very place his character Tony Manero made famous – Lenny’s Pizza.

“Travolta changed the culture of Brooklyn and America forever in both fashion and music,” New York State Sen. Marty Golden said. “The movie 'Saturday Night Fever' brought millions of Americans to the dance floor to the rhythm of disco.”

Travolta’s character brought fame and popularity to the streets of Brooklyn – especially Lenny’s Pizza. In the film he orders two slices of pizza stacked on top of each other from the Brooklyn staple, then walks down the street eating them. This scene transformed Lenny’s from a typical Brooklyn pizza joint to a tourist destination, where customers are often caught ordering a double decker slice, mimicking Manero’s style.

To honor Travolta and his part in elevating the pizzeria's popularity, they will be naming a slice in his honor.

The event, which NYPD plans to close the streets for, will be filled with high-profile guests, including Joe Causi, from our sister station WCBS-FM 101.1, who will serve as the function’s emcee, and Will DeMeo, Travolta's co-star in the upcoming film “Gotti,” who will be hosting the ceremony.

In addition, Gianluca Mech, Italian business mogul and fan of the film, will attend. Last year, Mech spent north of $200,000 to remake the 2001 Odyssey Disco on the film’s 40th anniversary.

Brooklyn natives and “Saturday Night Fever” fans alike are all looking forward to Travolta’s appearance.

“The community is excited for John’s return to Brooklyn,” Golden said. “Everywhere I go I am asked about the ceremony. We feel we are bringing back a little history to the streets he once made famous."
