NY State Sen. Jose Peralta's Death Attributed To Undiagnosed Leukemia

NEW YORK (AP) -- Medical examiners have determined what caused the unexpected death of New York state Sen. Jose Peralta: a rare and aggressive form of leukemia.
The New York City medical examiners' office released its finding Tuesday, nearly two months after Peralta's death.
The 47-year-old Democrat was the first Dominican-American elected to New York's Senate. He was nearing the end of nearly two decades in office after losing a primary last fall.
His Nov. 21 death stunned the statehouse and his family. Family spokesman Chris Sosa said Tuesday that Peralta had been feeling cold-like symptoms and pressure behind his ears but had no idea he had acute promyelocytic leukemia.
The National Institutes of Health says it's a fast-moving and uncommon type of leukemia, which is a form of blood cancer.
