Opening Statements Monday In Karina Vetrano Murder Trial

October 31, 2018 - 12:06 pm

NEW YORK (AP) -- Opening statements will be delivered on Monday at the trial of a man accused of killing a New York City runner.
A jury of eight women and four men will hear the case of Chanel Lewis, who is charged with sexually abusing and strangling Karina Vetrano as she ran on a park trail in Howard Beach, Queens in August 2016.
Philip Vetrano searched and found his daughter's body.
The New York Post says the victim's mother wept on Tuesday as the judge read the charges to the jurors.
Legal Aid, which is representing Lewis, says it has "serious doubts'' about evidence-gathering and police activities leading to his arrest. It predicts jurors will decide that the government has not proved its case.
The defense hasn't decided yet whether Lewis will testify.
