NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Midtown residents were greeted to an unusual sight Friday morning when a seemingly abandoned safe was left on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 47th Street.

A 911 call alerted police to the suspicious safe and prompted a response from the Emergency Service Unit.

The caller reportedly said the safe was smoking and sparking, but officers found nothing inside.

As it turns out, the 4,000-pound safe was being transported by truck but was left on the corner while the vehicle moved to avoid a ticket due to parking restrictions.

The company responsible for leaving the safe was issued three summonses, the NYPD said on Twitter.
