NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Now that medical marijuana is legal in New York, a state lawmaker has introduced a bill that would make it legal to use on pets as well.

Westchester State Assembly member Amy Paulin said we already treat some health issues in animals using remedies that humans use; like xanax for an anxious dog.

"My dog is 18-years-old," she said, "He's not in pain, he's a happy animal, but I know every day that it's very possible that he could be gone tomorrow."

The science is still new about whether medical marijuana is effective in treating animals. The types of issues it could be used for include pain relief, seizures, and anxiety.

Paulin's bill would allow vets to prescribe medical marijuana for pets. It's still new ground though, and the American Veterinary Medical Association said there needs to be a significant amount of research done to look into the issue.
