Report: LIRR Riders Say Trains Are Filthy Even With More Car Cleaners

January 14, 2019 - 12:36 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Long Island Railroad riders are fed up with filthy trains.

According to a report from Newsday, spilled coffee, beer, half-chewed food and tons of litter has become the norm on many trains. One rider even reported seeing a cockroach.

The investigation found that the transit agency has been backing away from its plan to increase cleaning efforts aboard the trains.

Even with ridership at historic highs, the railroad has nixed plans to have car cleaners aboard trains during their runs to tidy up.

Though, an MTA spokesman says they have increased staff, and have increased the number of trains cleaned per day by about five percent.

Riders are still not impressed, the report claimed.  One commuter said he's even reluctant to put his bag on the floor over concern about what might get stuck to it.

Another noted that people have stop caring and add to the problem if they step onto a gross car.

“Garbage begets garbage,” he said.
