NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The Nassau County Health Department is warning Long Island Rail Road riders that they may have been exposed to measles during their commutes last week.

Health Department officials said an infected person rode on LIRR trains between Mineola and New York Penn Station and may have visited several local LIRR stations, shuttle bus stops and the Noches de Colombia Restaurant on Sept. 11, 12 and 14.

After a second adult in Nassau contracted the disease, officials were prompted to warn resident of the dates and location where they may have been exposed.

“Something about measles is that it can be the environment for two hours after the person left. So we want to make sure that people are aware that they were potentially exposed to measles,” said Mary Ellen Laurain, a spokesperson for the Department of Health.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said in a statement that the county’s disease control team is working with the New York State Health department to investigate the measles case. She notes the county will “take appropriate action based on the findings of this case.”

Laurain says the best way residents can protect themselves is to make sure they have received the MMR vaccine.

The newest case comes two weeks after the county health department confirmed its first case of measles in the area since 2013.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention warns that the disease can potentially become deadly for those who are not vaccinated.
