Long Beach To Shine Bright With New Lights For Holiday Season

LONG BEACH, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A Long Island beach town will be sparkling with new holiday lights this year.

The famous boardwalk, Kennedy Plaza and light posts around Long Beach will be decorated with $16,000 worth of new lights after the old ones were damaged because of Sandy.

The money is coming from a relief fund that was donated to the city after the storm, said Council President Anthony Eramo.

"We're not spending that much money on the size of our budget -- to spend $16,000 of donated funds to make sure our city looks beautiful for the holidays, to make sure our residents feel that spirit during the holidays," Eramo said.

He says it will also help the economy during the normally slower months in this beach community.

"It's a very unique experience to walk on our boardwalk anytime of the year, but when the lights are up it's very festive, it's a nice night out," Eramo said. "Hopefully you get a little chill, need a little hot chocolate and visit one of our excellent restaurants."

Eramo said Long Beach has seen a resurgence of restaurants and has become "a little foodie city."
