BELLMORE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Nassau County police say a 54-year-old man shot and killed his wife before ending his own life Thursday.

Douglas Kelly and his wife, 50-year-old Dawn Kelly, were fatally shot in their Bellmore home sometime during the evening, police said.

According to a Newsday report, the couple’s 21-year-old daughter found their bodies later on.

Detective Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick said the daughter found the mother “shot in the chest by a shotgun.”

Authorities revealed Friday that the 54-year-old has a history of verbal abuse towards his wife. Though, Fitzpatrick said family members never thought the abuse would escalate to murder.

“This particular relationship was off our radar. There’s no orders of protection, no prior arrests for domestic incidents,” Fitzpatrick said of the incident.

The detective said the couple's daughter was at a friend's house on Thursday because her mother had warned her about a “bad fight” the couple was having.

“The cause of the fight was money issues, he was asking the wife— who’s the main breadwinner now for money in regards to cars,” Fitzpatrick said.

Police say the 21-year-old came home to check on her 50-year-old mother when she couldn't reach her by telephone.
