LI Gold Star Families To Participate In Jets' Salute To Service Game

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Three Gold Star families from Suffolk County will be honored in a big way this coming November.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone on Monday surprised three families of fallen service members with the opportunity to participate in the New York Jets' Salute to Service game.

“This is pretty special,” said Joann Lyles, the mother of Corporal Jordan Haerter, who was killed in 2008.

She will be there with 147 others to hold the American flag on the field during the pregame ceremonies when the Jets take on the New York Giants on Nov. 10.

“What I really like about this event is that, rather than remembering a death, we're celebrating lives,” noted the father of Lt. Michael Murphy.

The families also encourage people to support local organizations on Long Island that help veterans and their families.
