NESCONSET, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A 75-year-old Long Island man is accused of threatening to kill supporters of a Republican congressman and President Donald Trump.

Suffolk County police say Martin Astrof made the threats at the reelection headquarters of Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-New York). They claim Astrof was angry with a campaign volunteer and made an attempt to hit him with a car.

Authorities said Astrof had backed up his car in an aggressive manner but just missed striking the volunteer with his vehicle.

He was later arrested at his Nesconset home. He is charged with making a terroristic threat and reckless endangerment.

Zeldin was made aware of the incident and praised the volunteer and police officers while condemning the violence.

“You can never cross that line where you’re actually advocating, or engaging in, physical violence towards your political opposition,” Zeldin said.

Astrof is scheduled to be arraigned Saturday.
