Study: Long Island Residents Among Healthiest In New York State

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Long Island residents are among the healthiest in the state, according to a new study.

Nassau County ranked second place and Suffolk County came in 16th for the healthiest areas in New York State.

Some factors that made a difference were low smoking rates, greater wealth and more doctors per person than the state average.

“To me, it's not entirely surprising when you consider that sort of income and educational make up of our county, specific in Nassau, which means people know what is good and bad for their health,” Stony Brook University assistant professor Dr. Hector Alcala said.

He explains that in both counties, people make appointments for regular health check-ups and know that good health is maintained with a proper diet and exercise.

Though, the reason Suffolk County may not have ranked as high as Nassau County could be the opioid epidemic.

“Here in Suffolk County there's actually an increase in premature death compared to last year so, I think that that the opioid epidemic is probably part of that,” Dr. Alcala explained.

Rockland County ranked as the number one healthiest county while the Bronx ranked last place.
