Long Island Town Tackles Invasive Vine With Help From Bloomberg

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Before it takes hold for the summer, Southampton Town is battling an invasive, quick-growing vine with the help of a $183,000 grant from former Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The mile-a-minute weed, or Persicaria perfoliata, is all over the place on Long Island and especially took off after Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

It's bright green and apparently got to the area from East Asia.

It's becoming more and more invasive as the years go by, the town's environmental analyst told Newsday.

The town board voted on April 9 to have a landscaper remove the vine on two town properties in Tuckahoe.

They'll start by pulling the vine out by hand before the plant bears fruit, which is one of the best ways to get rid of it.
