Macy's Fireworks A Day Away From Blasting Off

July 03, 2018 - 1:01 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Crews have been working on this year’s Macy’s Fireworks Show since July 5 of last year, and now, they are a day away from providing a holiday blast.

As WCBS 880’s Peter Haskell reported, it is not that there are more fireworks in the Macy’s show. It is that the fireworks themselves are different.

Gary Souza is the show’s designer.

"Almost every firework that is in the Macy's show is a unique type of firework,” Souza said. “It's not the type of firework that you're going to see at every small town that you go and watch."

Macy’s producer Susan Tercero said this is the biggest show since the millennium.

"We have seven barges,” she said. “We have over 75,000 shells and effects – all of it spanning over a mile long."

This year’s show is on the East River.
