NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – A man was arrested after police say he tried to stop officers from entering a burning East Harlem apartment where another man was found stabbed to death on Saturday morning.

Police said they were responding to a 911 call about a fire at Acacia Gardens on E. 120th Street around 4:20 a.m. when they found a 31-year-old man in a hallway on the ninth floor.

They said the man was combative, fighting the officers and trying to prevent police from entering apartment 9G, where there was a fire.

Police eventually got the 31-year-old man into custody and took him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan for treatment and observation.

According to the New York Post, the 31-year-old man was naked at the time of his arrest.

The man and five NYPD officers suffered smoke inhalation; they are all expected to be OK.

After the FDNY extinguished the fire, officers went into the apartment and found a 30-year-old man dead with multiple stabbed wounds, police said.

The NYPD said charges against the 31-year-old man were pending amid an investigation into the homicide and fire.

The 30-year-old man who died has not been identified. His relationship to the other man is not known.
