NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — New information released Wednesday on the road rage death of an off-duty FDNY firefighter reveals the suspected murderer is a reported gang member on parole.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermont Shea says it was only a minor fender bender that was the catalyst for the fatal beating of firefighter Faizal Coto.

“As they came together, and then eventually pulled to the side of the road, we believe that our firefighter was set on in a very short period of time, struck and then left on the side of the road,” Shea said.

Joseph Desmond, 29, was arrested at the Circle Motor Lodge in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, 24 hours after the attack.

He’s still in New Jersey while the extradition process works its way through, but Shea says Desmond was on parole when he confronted Coto on the Belt Parkway on Sunday.

“He has a number of charges in his past, he has assault charges, he also has significant drug charges,” Shea announced.

The alleged killer has a history of violence and is reportedly a member of the Latin Kings street gang.

Desmond allegedly left Coto on the side of the parkway with severe head trauma.

A baseball bat has come up in the investigation but Chief Shea said it is not definitive that the bat was the murder weapon.
