NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Police have arrested a suspect in connection to last November’s attack on a Brooklyn woman at the Church Avenue subway station.

On Friday, Nov. 9, 57-year-old Marie Washington was exiting a Q train inside the station when an unknown man approached her and punched her repeatedly in the head.

According to police, the man made a derogatory anti-black statement during the assault and fled the scene.

Washington did not realize she had also been stabbed in the incident until she woke up in a pool of blood the next morning. She also required surgery for a collapsed lung.

On Tuesday, 33-year-old Aleksejs Saveljevs was arrested and charged with attempted murder and assault as a hate crime, among other charges.
