SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A lightning strike at a park on Long Island Saturday night sent a man to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Aneal Lall, 32, was standing under a tree near the boardwalk at Sunken Meadow State Park, according to park officials, when he was struck by lightning just before 7 p.m.

Emergency personnel got to the scene quickly and performed CPR on him before sending him to a hospital in Smithtown.

The man was pronounced dead hours later.

The incident marks the 16th lightning strike death in the U.S. this year, according to the National Weather Service.

It’s the first lightning strike death in the New York region since August 2016, when two people standing under a tree at a park in Poughkeepsie were killed.
