Suspected MS-13 Member In Custody After Deadly Shooting On Queens Subway Platform

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A suspected MS-13 gang member was arrested Monday in connection to a fatal shooting that occurred in broad daylight on a 7 train platform in Queens.

Police the suspect got into a fight with the victim onboard a Manhattan-bound 7 train and it eventually spilled onto the platform at the 90th Street-Elmhurst Avenue station in Jackson Heights shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday.

A witness began filming the dispute and posted the disturbing video to Twitter, showing a scuffle before one man pulled out a gun.

Terrified passengers can be seen running from the gunfire as a half-dozen shots ring out.

A man, believed to be in his 20s, was shot multiple times in the face. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he was a part of the 18th Street gang.

The suspected shooter, who was taken into custody Monday less than 24 hours after the shooting, is no stranger to police.

"He is a gang member, he is in our criminal group data base as an MS-13 member. He has been arrested before in New York City. And, in fact, he has been part of a criminal group gang case before in New York City," said Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea.

Shea said the video and tips help police track down the suspect.

The incident has rattled nerves in Queens, but police say the subway is very safe, with the NYPD reporting one crime for every million passengers who use the system each day.

Shea says this incident underscores the need to continue cracking down on gangs.

"The fastest way to get the NYPD's attention is an incident like this," he said.

Police are still searching for a second suspect.
