NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – A masked man attacked an off-duty NYPD officer with a metal chain in a lower Manhattan subway station this week, police said.

The 37-year-old officer was on a northbound 2 train pulling into the Park Place station just after 3 p.m. Tuesday when she was attacked by the man, according to police.

The suspect was wearing a surgical mask and standing on the platform as the train’s doors opened. Police said he hurled a metal bicycle chain as the subway doors opened, striking the officer in the face, police said.

The man then got on the train she was on and took it to the next stop, Chambers Street, where he ran away.

The officer was taken to New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital with swelling and bruising to her face.

Police released surveillance video of the suspect on Wednesday. It shows him at the Chambers Street station.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
