School Board Takes Legal Action After Chaotic Visit By Mount Vernon Mayor, Fatboy

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- The Mount Vernon Board of Education is condemning a high school visit by the mayor and rapper Fatboy that triggered violence and mayhem.

The school board is taking legal action against Mayor Richard Thomas after they say he showed up unannounced last Friday at Mount Vernon High School with the internet personality.

School officials say it caused a ruckus as students left midterms and flocked to see the pair. There were fights and suspensions. A trophy case was shattered and a door broken amidst the chaos.

According to the board, school officials asked the mayor and his entourage to leave and they refused intially.

Mayor Thomas says there must have been a miscommunication and insists they did reach out. They went to the school with an anti-bullying message.

"We followed the process, for some reason it didn't work this time. But look, the invitiation still stands to sit down and talk with the school district. But the bottom line is we can't hide the truth. The truth is there's bullying out there and we want to help stop it," Thomas said. "I'm not going to be bullied by the school district. We went there to deal with anti-bullying and these are conditions that exist in our community, in our society overall and there are people out there like myself and Fatboy that want to make a difference.

The mayor does apologize for what he calls a misunderstanding, but he also says he's not entirely responsible for what happened. He calls violence a chronic problem at the high school.

The superintendent has barred the mayor from school grounds without his approval. The board wants the city to pay for the damages.
