Mega Millions Jackpot Is Largest In U.S. History

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Tuesday night’s $1.6 billion Mega Millions jackpot, the largest lottery prize in U.S. history, has lottery machines working overtime.

Though, experts are saying not to get your hopes up. Lottery players face odds of 1 in 303 million of winning the Mega Millions drawing Tuesday.

But that hasn’t stopped some people from remaining optimistic and making plans to leave their jobs if they win big.

“I’m not dealing with this stress every day,” one hopeful resident in Paramus told WCBS 880.

Mega Millions set a world record for lottery jackpots after there were no winning numbers for the $1 billion prize on Friday.

The highest recorded lottery jackpot was $1.586 billion for a Powerball drawing in 2016.

If a lucky winner hits all six numbers to win the jackpot, they will be able to receive an immediate cash payout of $904 million. They could also receive the $1.6 billion cash prize over the course of 29 years.

However, winning the lottery isn’t always for everyone, as one New Jersey resident reminded WCBS 880’s Marla Diamond.

“I'm happy with my lifestyle the way it is right now,” Dave O’Donovan said. “I work for myself. What I really need is to control my time off.”

If you don't win tonight and are willing to plunk down a little more money, there is a consolation prize: Wednesday night’s Powerball jackpot has soared to $620 million.
