Mets Fire Pitching Coach Eiland, Bullpen Coach Hernandez

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The New York Mets have fired pitching coach Dave Eiland and bullpen coach Chuck Hernandez, general manager Brodie Van Wagenen announced Thursday.

The team will be replacing Eiland with 82-year-old Phil Regan, the former pitching coach of the Cubs and Indians. Ricky Bones will also be returning as bullpen coach and a new position of pitching strategist has been created for Jeremy Accardo.

“Our goal here is to try and get better. As an organization we want to improve every day. I think as we evaluated the season so far, we have fallen short of a variety of things as a team and we all have to look ourselves in the mirror for that shortcoming and we have to make the best decisions we can in this moment to improve our stock,” Van Wagenen said.

Eiland, 52, was in his second season as the Mets' pitching coach. Hernandez was in his first season with the team.

Van Wagenen says the decision to relieve the two of their duties was the team’s performance.

“When we assess the first two and half months of the season, and in particular, over the course of the last several weeks, we felt the bullpen performance had a lot of room to improve, and I think that is the root of this move,” the general manager said.

Many speculate Mets manager Mickey Callaway could also be fired as the Mets begin a four-game series with the Cubs with a 4.67 ERA, the third worst in the National League.
