Mom Apologizes For Son’s Crash That Killed Elderly Couple, Half-Brother

MIDDLE ISLAND, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — The mother of a teenage driver is apologizing after her son fled from cops in a stolen SUV and slammed into another vehicle on Long Island this weekend, killing an elderly couple.

“They didn’t ask for this, they were pretty much almost home and I feel for them and I want them to know that we feel for them and we are sorry,” said Wyteria Belford.

Authorities say Belford’s son, 17-year-old Nahriek Belford, was behind the wheel of the stolen SUV when police spotted the vehicle failing to stop at a stop sign in Yaphank.

The teen refused to pull over for a Suffolk County Police Officer, sparking a pursuit that spanned nearly five miles, according to authorities.

While attempting to evade police, Nahriek ended up crashing into another SUV on Route 25 in Middle Island, as it was entering an apartment complex.

The married couple in the SUV, identified as Jerome and Randee Weingarten, was killed in the crash. Nahriek’s 19-year-old half-brother was also killed.

Now, Belford says Suffolk Police are just as responsible for the crash as her son.

“Chasing them, I feel like, the police is just as much at fault as they are,” Belford said. “Why couldn’t they wait ‘till he stopped somewhere, maybe he could have just followed them or something.”

The police commissioner says an investigation is under way but, it does appear the officer followed department policy.

Belford’s 17-year-old son is charged with reckless endangerment.
