NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A question by an 8-year-old boy set off a violent confrontation between two women and the child's mother on a New York City subway train earlier this month.

The 50-year-old victim and her son were on a Queens-bound E train when the boy asked his mother why another child on the train was wearing a costume.

According to the NYPD, the mother of that child overheard the question, got upset and confronted the victim.

She and another woman she was with put the victim in a chokehold, punched her in the face and hit her on the head with a cellphone, police said.

The suspects were last seen fleeing the 71st Street-Continental Avenue station.

Police on Tuesday night released surveillance video of the suspects.
