NEWARK (WCBS 880) – Police in Newark have arrested the boyfriend of a mother whose 7-year-old son was found dead inside their Newark home Monday.

Authorities said Mark Harper, 36, was arrested on a charge of endangering the welfare of a child. He has been identified as the boyfriend of Ayden Brown's mother.

The 7-year-old was discovered lifeless inside his home on Weequahic Avenue in Newark on Monday. Police remained at the crime scene into Tuesday morning.

Ayden’s mother went to work in the morning and had reportedly left him in the care of Harper, who called her a short time later to say something was wrong with her son.

911 was called but when the paramedics arrived at the home, Ayden was alone and unresponsive.

He was taken to Beth Israel Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

CBS 2 spoke to the boy’s cousin, Sonia Monroe, who pleaded with the boyfriend to come forward.

“Just turn yourself in,” she said. “We want justice for Ayden. He was an awesome kid – great, great bubbly personality.”

The cause of death has not been determined and the medical examiner's office is waiting on the results of an autopsy.
