MTA To Start Rolling Out New Tap-To-Pay System This Week

May 28, 2019 - 3:50 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The initial rollout for the MTA's new tap-to-pay system is set for Friday.

Scanners for the system, dubbed OMNY -- which stands for "One Metro New York," will be in place at 16 subway stations along the 4, 5 and 6 lines between Grand Central and Atlantic Avenue and all Staten Island buses.

Instead of a MetroCard, riders must tap the OMNY scanner with a contactless credit card or smart device to pay their fares.

The OMNY system is expected to be fully deployed across the MTA by 2023.
