TRENTON (WCBS 880) — Gov. Phil Murphy on Tuesday signed new bills aimed at tightening the already strict gun laws in New Jersey.

“We all take great pride in having some of the toughest gun laws in the country,” the governor said. “We see the results of that by having among the lowest rates of gun-related deaths in the entire nation.”

The Democrat, alongside Attorney General Gurbir Grewal and other lawmakers, signed one measure that would make so-called “smart guns” available in the state.

According to Murphy, the weapons are “guns that can be only fired by their rightful and licensed owner.”

He also signed three other measures aimed at reining in gun violence.

Additionally, there are new criminal convictions that would prohibit someone from legally buying a gun.

Murphy would also like to see ammunition sales tracked and reported to the state police, but that bill is still pending.
