Muslim Woman Says NYPD Brushed Off Case After She Was Beaten By Teens

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – A Muslim woman says she was beaten and robbed by a mob of teens because of her religion and that the NYPD didn’t respond urgently enough to the attack.

Fatoumata Camara says she was on a BX35 bus in the Morrisania section of the Bronx on May 10 when four teens she’s never met started making fun of her clothes.

She says things got physical when she got off the bus: she was pushed and beaten, causing her to suffer a broken nose. She says she also had $500 and other items stolen from her.

Camara’s attorney Ahmed Mohammed, with the Council on American-Islamic Relations, says his client’s case was not properly handled by police.

“The police told her that there was not surveillance footage and yet there's a camera right behind us. She, and with helpful friends, on their own came in here and begged for the surveillance footage from this store owner here,” Mohammed said.

The NYPD says Camara originally couldn’t identify potential suspects, but after she gave them the surveillance video, its Hate Crimes Task Force will investigate.

“Every time I watch this video I cry,” Camara said of the surveillance footage.
