MINEOLA, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Nassau County will be hosting a gun buy-back event next weekend in an effort to prevent gun violence.

The event will happen at Union Baptist Church in Hempstead on Saturday, Sept. 28.

The program is anonymous, and people will be paid cash for every operable gun they bring in.

Long Island officials say the event is mend to raise awareness about the “gun violence epidemic.” Assemblywoman Taylor Darling is also hoping the buy-back can help ease the mind of many residents.

“This weekend, I was fielding calls from different constituents, who were frightened to go to their home because of the shootings that occur,” she told reporters. “At this rate, I feel at a daily basis I am getting calls that there is a shooting happening, and they are happening near schools.”

Depending on the weapon brought in, firearm owners can receive $100 to $400 in cash with no questions asked.

Linda Beigal Shulman lost her son, a teacher and coach, in the Parkland School shooting in Florida and says the event is crucial for saving lives.

“You get one gun back, you save the potential of one person's life,” she said.
