1 Dead, 9 Hurt In Washington Heights Fire

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- An overnight fire in Washington Heights has turned deadly.

The blaze broke out around 12:30 a.m. Friday in a five-story building at 945 St. Nicholas Ave.

When the fire was extinguished, EMS crews found a 41-year-old woman unconscious and unresponsive in her fourth-floor apartment. The woman, identified by police as Natasha Paulema, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Nine other people were injured in the blaze.

The FDNY said no working smoke alarm was found in the apartment.The cause of the fire is under investigation.
