National Urban League Leader Calls On Amazon To Diversify

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — When the Amazon deal is completed, the company will need to hire tens of thousands of new employees, and when it does, the National Urban League is hoping the retail giant will break from it’s old habits.

“This is not about P.R., this is not about spin, this is not about a handshake,” said Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League. “It’s about treating this as a business imperative in the 21st century.”

Morial has written an open letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos ahead of its move to Long Island City to ensure the company hires a diverse staff in the new headquarters.

“The benefits have to be broadly enjoyed and broadly spread,” Morial told WCBS 880.

The head of the National Urban League says New York City is diverse and Amazon’s work force should reflect that.

He explains that other companies have already answered the call with firm commitments to add people of color to the front lines and board rooms.

Morial said if Amazon wants to be a good neighbor, they will do the same.
