Netflix To Fans: 'Please Do Not Hurt Yourselves' With 'Bird Box' Challenge

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Netflix didn't see this coming.

The company issued a warning to fans after its popular film "Bird Box" inspired the new year's first potentially dangerous internet challenge.

The R-rated thriller, starring Sandra Bullock, John Malkovich, Sarah Paulson and Trevante Rhodes, follows a group of survivors who have to blindfold themselves so as not to make eye contact with a deadly force.

Following the film's huge success, some videos started popping up on social media showing people parodying the movie and walking around blindfolded. CBS News reports one woman nearly burned herself on a heater and another boy repeatedly crashed into furniture with his tricycle. Another video showed a toddler slam into a wall while blindfolded.

"Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes," Netflix tweeted on Wednesday.

Netflix says "Bird Box" is one of its most popular films ever with 45 million subscriber accounts worldwide watching the film during its first seven days on the service.
